Fabric Estimator
As a courtesy to our Interior Designer and Decorators we offer this yardage information to help you estimate yardage. If we do not measured the project we cannot be responsible for estimate. For best results, consult our sewing professional. Please keep in mind when determining how much fabric is needed for your window treatment , you will first need to determine your window treatment design, and then the type of fabric pattern you are going to use for your window treatment or bedding ensemble.
For our fabric estimating example we are using a 36” window, yardage amounts are based on a 54“ wide fabric, extra amounts needed to match patterns. There is no set amount of fabric you will need for a particular window treatment. All windows are different and fabrics vary by repeat and width.
When doing single width panels that are 108” long, and the fabric has a repeat pattern of 12” you will need to add 20”for the top and the bottom hem. Then you divide the length of your panels by 12” (which is the repeat of your fabric), 128 divided by 12“, that would almost be 11 repeats. 12” repeat x 11 = 132” x 2 ( panels)is 264“ divided by 36” ( which is a yard ) = 7 yards of fabric will be needed for a pair of single width panels.
If you are doing swags and cascades on a board for a 36” window, and you want to use fabric with strips pattern ( no repeat) and the swag drop is 22” and the cascade drop is 45”. For the swag you will need 1.5 yards of fabric. The cascades we are using in this example are self lined and the drop is 45”. So for the cascades, add 3” 48” x 4 = 192 divided by 36” = 5 yards. The total fabric needed for this window treatment will be 6.5 yards .
When doing inside mount roman shade ,on a 32” window width with a 65” long drop , you have to add 25” in length for the ham and pleads. 65” long + 25” = 90” divided by 36” is 2.5 yards.
King bedding is used as an example for fabric estimating, yardage amounts are based on solid fabric 54” wide, (extra amounts needed to match patterns). A king size bed , usually is 76” width X 80 long, For this example the drop is 22” long x 2 = 44”+ 76” ( the width of the bed) =120 (total width of cover). The length of a king size bed is 80” + 22”(cover drop) = 102 (that is the length of the cover). If you fabric is 54“ wide and your cover width is 120” , you will need 3 widths of fabric. 102“ x 3(widths) = 306” divide by 36” = 8.5 yards for each side ,that will give you 17 years for the coverlet (always add 1 yard extra total of 18 yards).
If you are making a gathered dust ruffle for your kind size bed with 18” drop you will need 4 widths of fabric to have a standard gathered, also add extra for the hem which usually is 6”. Now 24” x 12” = 288 divided by 36” = 8 yards and don’t forget to add an extra yard for the decking. Estimates must be confirmed by your workroom. Each workroom has their own set of guidelines.
